Legislator urges Congress to exempt 2020 unemployment income from taxes
State Rep. David Martin today stood up for the hundreds of thousands of Michigan workers who were left jobless through no fault of their own when local businesses were forced to shut down during the pandemic.
Martin, of Davison, introduced a resolution in the Michigan House this week calling on Congress not to tax unemployment income on federal tax returns for the 2020 tax year.
“The past year brought unprecedented circumstances to our country and our state, with approximately 2.3 million Michiganders receiving unemployment assistance at some time during 2020 – many for the first time in their lives,” Martin said. “The last thing struggling families need right now is to be hit with a surprise tax bill they can’t afford to pay.”
Thirty-seven percent of taxpayers were not aware that unemployment benefits are taxed, according to a poll conducted last summer by tax-preparation company Jackson Hewitt. Of those who had received benefits, 61 percent said they had not selected for taxes to be withheld.
House Resolution 34 was referred to the House Tax Policy Committee for consideration.
