State Rep. Alicia St. Germaine (R-Harrison Township) introduced a plan that would provide Michigan teachers with a $2,000 state income tax credit to help offset the out-of-pocket costs they often incur for classroom supplies.
“Many teachers spend hundreds of dollars from their own pockets to make sure their students have what they need to succeed,” said St. Germaine. “This bill is about giving back to the educators who give so much to our children and communities. It’s time we recognize their dedication with meaningful financial relief.”
The proposed bill would allow eligible K-12 teachers in Michigan to claim a refundable tax credit of up to $2,000 for qualifying expenses related to classroom materials, instructional tools, or other educational resources purchased for student use.
“Teachers should not have to choose between their personal finances and their students’ success,” said St. Germaine. “This bill shows that Michigan values its educators, and this is a step toward supporting and retaining quality educators in the state.”
