State Rep. Mike Mueller recently paid tribute to the first responders who answer the phone when people dial 911 with a resolution to declare April 15-19 as Public Safety Telecommunicators Week in the state of Michigan.

The resolution acknowledges the pivotal role that dispatchers play in the emergency response system. With approximately 2,200 highly skilled 911 public safety telecommunicators serving a population of approximately 10 million, these professionals are the first point of contact during crises, handling an average of 6.5 million 911 calls annually.

“911 dispatchers are the lifeline between the public and emergency services, handling difficult and traumatic situations with professionalism and compassion,” said Mueller, R-Linden, a retired law enforcement officer. “Their ability to manage high-stress situations, communicate clearly and calmly, and multitask effectively under pressure is admirable.”

The resolution highlights the specialized skill set required of public safety telecommunicators, including strong communication skills, active listening, quick decision-making, and emotional stability. It recognizes the dedication, professionalism, and exceptional service of telecommunicators who serve our communities 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, initially established in 1981, serves as an opportunity to celebrate and thank telecommunications personnel for their commitment to public safety. In 1994, President Clinton signed a Presidential Proclamation declaring the second week of April as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.

“I’d like to share my deep appreciation to public safety dispatchers in Michigan for their dedication and service,” said Rep. David Martin, R-Davison. “They are true first responders, and their contributions to the safety and well-being of our communities are immeasurable.”
