A plan from state Rep. Jay DeBoyer honoring a fallen military hero from Chesterfield Township was advanced today by a Senate committee.

DeBoyer’s House Bill 4154 designates a portion of M-3 in Macomb County from the intersection of Gratiot Ave. and 23 Mile Road to the end of M-3 as the Senior Chief Petty Officer Jason P. May Memorial Highway.

Born and raised in Chesterfield Township, Officer May bravely served in the United States Navy for 18 years. He passed away unexpectedly at age 38 in June of 2015 while aboard the U.S.S. Essex, an amphibious assault ship which served in part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

“For nearly two decades, Officer May served our country and fellow community members and helped protect our freedoms,” said DeBoyer, of Clay Township. “We are incredibly thankful for his selflessness and duty, and this designation would allow people throughout the area to recognize and commemorate the sacrifice he made for all of us.”

Officer May’s father Phil, mother Pam and stepmother Theresa joined DeBoyer for testimony on the legislation in the House Transportation, Mobility and Infrastructure Committee shortly before the country was set to honor and mourn fallen U.S. military personnel last year.

“This memorial will mean a great deal to this family as well as the community,” DeBoyer said. “We will never forget those who have given their lives while serving our great nation as well as their families, and this tribute will be a testament to that truth.”

The Michigan Memorial Highway Act was enacted in 2001 and allows for the naming of bridges and highways within the state. HB 4154 now moves to the full Senate for consideration after being advanced unanimously by the Senate Veterans and Emergency Services Committee.
