State Rep. Cam Cavitt today joined the House in passing a state budget that reduces government waste and protects the values that Michigan families prioritize.
“This is a win for families across Northern Michigan and throughout the state,” said Cavitt (R-Cheboygan). “The House put forward a clear path to fund the services that matter to the people of Michigan while cutting fraud and failing government programs.”
The $75.2 billion budget is a decrease from last year’s spending, highlighting the efforts to promote a balanced budget that cuts waste, fraud, and abuse throughout state government. This was achieved without proposed tax increases. Welfare oversight was also strengthened in the budget, with new guidelines in place to help ensure that bad actors are not abusing the system.
The 2027 budget also details a framework for preventing the Attorney General from targeting oil and gas companies with politically motivated lawsuits.
“No industry should have to wonder whether it will become the next political target simply because it is successful,” Cavitt said. “We can’t allow the Attorney General to punish lawful businesses just because of the product they produce. Elected officials should not be using taxpayer-funded litigation to accomplish actions that the voters did not ask for.”
The budget also puts safeguards in place to ensure that rural communities across Michigan receive the federal funding they are entitled to.
“The application process for the Rural Health Transformation Program was grossly flawed,” Cavitt said. “The state of Michigan should have been eligible for far more federal dollars than we were offered, but we tainted this process by allowing heavily urban areas to classify themselves as rural. In our budget, we put oversight measures in place to see how the Michigan Department of Human Services processed these applications so we can make sure our funding is not jeopardized in the future.”
